A rural house in winter has something summer doesn’t: the fire lit, long meals that run into the evening and the whole group under one roof, with no rush. At Can Micos, an 18th-century farmhouse in Riudarenes (Girona), winter is our favourite time to bring family or friends together.
It is also low season: fewer people everywhere, lower prices, and the surroundings, from the Costa Brava to the Montseny, can be enjoyed at a gentle pace. In this guide we explain what the house is like in winter, what to celebrate each month and what to do nearby when it’s cold.
| Heating | Central heating in every room |
| Fireplace | In the living room, firewood included |
| Capacity | 16 to 25 people, the whole house |
| Dining room | For up to 30 people |
| Low-season price | From €35 per person per night (Christmas, New Year and long weekends are priced differently) |
| Minimum stay | 2 nights at weekends |
Why choose a rural house in winter
In winter the pace changes. It’s no longer about spending the day by the pool, but about being together: a lunch that starts at one and ends with coffee by the fire, a card game that goes on and on, a short walk in the morning and back home before dark. For a large group, having a whole farmhouse to yourselves is exactly what you need.
It’s also easier: more dates are free, prices are lower and the places around, which fill up in summer, can be visited calmly. Tossa de Mar without crowds or the Estany de Sils on a misty morning are a different experience.

It doesn’t snow every year, but when it does, the farmhouse looks like this.
What Can Micos is like in winter
The house is ready for the cold. It has central heating in every room, so bedrooms are warm from the moment you arrive, and the 60 m² living room has a fireplace: we leave you firewood so you can light it whenever you like. It’s where everyone ends up gathering.
The dining room has a table for up to 30, perfect for long winter meals, and the kitchen is equipped to cook for the whole group. If you’d rather not cook, we can arrange catering. The pool is closed from November to March, but the 115 m² covered barbecue area is still a great spot for a calçotada or a midday grill.

Winter month by month
Every winter month has its own excuse to get the group together.
| Month | What to celebrate |
|---|---|
| December | The early-December long weekend and get-togethers with friends or colleagues |
| Christmas and New Year | Christmas with family, New Year’s Eve and Epiphany |
| January | Quiet getaways after the holidays |
| February | Calçotadas, carnival and weekends by the fire |
